Society of Illustrators
I am so proud and honoured to have won a Silver medal in this year’s Society of Illustrator’s Annual Exhibition!
Since 1959, the Society of Illustrators has hosted the Illustrators Annual, the premier showcase for illustrators, featuring the most outstanding works created throughout the year. Open to artists worldwide, thousands of entries are considered by a jury of professionals, resulting in a published book and an exhibition that is open to the public on display at the Museum of Illustration in New York City.
An Opening Award Galas for each part of the Annual Exhibition, medals and certificates are presented to the illustrators and art directors whose works are judged best in each category. Two awards are granted per category, (gold and silver) and this year I have been awarded Silver in the category of surface/product design for my HK Willow ceramics. I am SO EXCITED! I am now officially an award-winning illustrator.
For the competition, I entered the special version of the Willow Pattern Collection that was made in green and gold exclusively for Lane Crawford department store in HK, as a limited edition to celebrate Chinese New Year 2020. I hope that everyone who bought a piece will enjoy it even more now it’s an award-winning design!
Thank you to Louis Papachristou at faux who is the most awesome production partner ever, Lane Crawford , who have supported me throughout my illustration career in HK, and the judges at the SOI in New York.

I’m taking part in the first Artists Sunday! It’s like Black Friday, except for art. I’ll add special pieces into my shop for that day only. My usual prints will also be available. International postage is going quite smoothly from Japan, so all are welcome!
The first annual Artists Sunday takes place this Sunday, Nov 29th, after Thanksgiving. Support your favorite local artists and give personal and handcrafted gifts this holiday season.
COPE on the radio!
Dr Tim Sim, COPE’s editor, was interviewed on RTHK today, alongside Johnson Lo from the HK Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute and Dr TC Lee from the Hong Kong Observatory. They discussed the COPE book series and how they help children to be prepared for natural disasters and hazards. So proud to be a part of this project! You can listen to the interview (in Chinese) here.
Upcoming (virtual) exhibitions
I have work in two upcoming online exhibition/events: The CWAJ Print Show in Japan, and the Vancouver Art Book Fair in Canada.
The CWAJ Print Show is a highly respected annual exhibition that has been held since 1956. It raises money through print sales for various scholarships. I’ve visited the show each year I’ve been in Japan, and was excited to finally apply to be a part of it. Unfortunately due to the ongoing COVID situation in Japan, they are having the 2020 show virtually, but I hope it will still be great!
You can visit the show here. It will be live from Monday October 12 at 3pm until Saturday October 31.
The Vancouver Art Book Fair is happening on the weekend of the 16/17/18 October. I’m participating as part of the wonderful Art Byte Critique Tokyo art group. There’s a link to the ABC site from the main VABF site and then you can link through to each of the participating members’ own site to purchase our work.
COPE links
The COPE picture book series is now being promoted by the Hong Kong Observatory, on their ‘My Little Observatory’ page, which features weather items for kids. It’s cute!

Japanese Paper Company
My work has been featured in the online gallery of the new Japanese Paper Company based in Sweden. You can see it in full here. It shows a selection of my mokuhanga works, including this fan I made for the original wood+paper+box project.
The online paper shop is an excellent place to get good quality Japanese paper in Europe!
St Lawrence University
I’m happy to announce that two of my mokuhanga works have been acquired by the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery of St Lawrence University in the US for their permanent collection. Both are pieces from my Gardens series: the first is this accordion folded print entitled Into the Garden (blue).
The second print is my most recent, Night Garden, in pink and green. This was initially a back sumi ink print, but I did some experiments with colour, so this is a unique print.
